Going on a Ski Vacation with 10 People… Good or Bad Idea?

05 Feb 2024

If you're reading this article, chances are you're tempted… but also a little worried! Let's break down the pros (and points to watch out for) of group holidays. Plus, discover our handy tips for a successful trip with 10, 12, 14, or even 18 people!

WHEN TO PLAN A GROUP SKI VACATION?

There are plenty of occasions to organize a group ski holiday:

  • Family Reunions: Siblings gathering with their spouses and children for a big cousin get-together.
  • Reunions with Old Friends: Friends who made a pact to "meet up in 10 years" and decide to celebrate on the slopes — reminiscing about the good old days when they moved mountains (and snowflakes) for their Business School's Sports Club (BDS).
  • Multi-Generational Family Trips: Bringing together grandparents, parents, and grandchildren in a chalet or apartment for 18 people.

A group ski vacation with 10 or more people is all about reconnecting in a stunning destination known for its wide-open spaces and diverse activities: the mountains!

GROUP VACATIONS: WHO TO TRAVEL WITH AND WHO TO AVOID?

The success of a group vacation largely depends on the people in the group (more than the destination itself). Ask yourself this crucial question: Do the people I’m considering inviting for a ski trip share the same mindset as me? If you're envisioning an active vacation while your friends or siblings can’t imagine waking up before noon (or vice versa), tensions are bound to rise.

Listen to your friends or family when they talk about past vacations. Are they meticulous planners or do they prefer to go with the flow? Do they need independence or prefer doing everything as a group? Do they have particular constraints or quirks that might become unbearable after a week together?

Traveling with six lactose-intolerant companions when you're dreaming of a week filled with raclette and fondue could be frustrating. Conversely, skiing with beginners can be delightful if you're into freeriding — they take lessons during the day while you carve your tracks, and everyone meets up at 5 p.m. for après-ski without any powder-related disagreements.

In short: Don’t necessarily choose travel companions who share your passion. Choose those who share your vision for the perfect vacation.

FINDING A DATE THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

The Most Challenging Step in Planning a Group Ski Vacation

Finding a date that works for everyone is the hardest part! That’s why it's essential to plan well in advance to give everyone time to organize themselves — and increase your chances of securing an apartment for 10, 12, 14 people, or even more.

Our Tip: Narrow down the options to three possible weeks based on your group's preferences (during or outside school holidays? In the heart of winter or in spring?). Check out our complete ski vacation guide to help you choose the best time.

Then use a simple voting system to see which week gathers the most participants. For example, create a "Ski Vacation 2024" WhatsApp group and use the poll feature. You could also try Doodle, a free and user-friendly scheduling tool.

BOOKING A COMFORTABLE APARTMENT FOR 10 PEOPLE (OR 18!)

"This Is My Space, This Is Your Space". This iconic line from Dirty Dancing applies perfectly to the accommodation you'll choose for your group vacation. Nothing tests even the strongest friendships like living in close quarters!

Opt for a spacious apartment with separate bedrooms so that each couple or family can indulge in their tidy or messy habits without annoying others. Avoid sticking the only single person in the group with the sofa — they deserve a real bed too. Consider a duplex or triplex to offer some privacy (and peace) for families with young children.

Large bay windows are also ideal for enhancing the feeling of space, in addition to the square footage, which you’ll want to double-check in advance.

Don’t overlook the number of bathrooms and toilets either — a critical factor for group harmony!

One major advantage of group vacations is that traveling with 10, 12, or 14 people allows you to benefit from economies of scale. You can afford a spacious and ultra-comfortable apartment for a more budget-friendly price than if you were just two or four people.

Group vacations: all together ... or not

You can absolutely go on a ski vacation with 10 people but still spend much of the trip in smaller groups of 2, 3, or 4. Don't be offended if some members of the group need a bit of alone time to recharge — like a family with a baby or a couple treating themselves to a romantic dinner at a fine-dining restaurant. Likewise, don’t feel guilty if you need a solitary break, like a simple walk to buy bread, even if you were the mastermind behind this big group vacation.

Holidays with 10 or more people are exciting but can also be tiring. Discuss this before the trip to avoid hurt feelings or disappointments, especially for the more social members of the group (maybe you?). Make sure everyone knows there will be moments spent together and times when people can enjoy their own activities at their own pace.

Embrace ambiversion: finding the perfect balance between extroversion and introversion depending on your mood — all with kindness and understanding.

Activities to Share — Even When Not Everyone Skis

Ski resorts like La Plagne, La Rosière, and Tignes are bursting with creative ways for skiers and non-skiers alike to enjoy activities together. How about a trapper camp evening? A scenic snowshoe hike with binoculars to spot chamois from afar? Or perhaps a thrilling descent in a sled or snake gliss?

Don’t hesitate to ask activity providers for advice on organizing group experiences. Some, like our partner Evolution 2, specialize in hosting groups and corporate events — planning activities for 10, 12, 14, or even 18 people is second nature to them.

In Summary: Going on a Ski Vacation with 10 People Is a Great Idea... If you go with the right people and book the right apartment! So, make a list of your dream travel companions, and we'll take care of the rest
