Why are Mountain Holidays so irresistible?

Why are Mountain Holidays so irresistible?

31 Aug 2023

We Could Have Talked About the Health Benefits of Mountain Holidays: the fresh air, the unparalleled winter sunlight, the wide variety of sports activities, and the satisfying fatigue they bring. But instead, we decided to list five more subtle reasons that make the mountains a timeless favorite destination, both in winter and summer!

THE MOUNTAINS INSPIRE SELF-EXCEEDING

"Reaching new heights," "moving mountains," "climbing your Everest"—have you ever used these metaphors in your daily life? Chances are you have! The symbolic power of summits resonates deeply with our everyday challenges, whether professional or personal.

During a mountain vacation, you move from metaphor to reality! Hiking 5, 10, or 50 kilometers. Climbing a positive elevation of 100, 1,000, or 2,000 meters in a single day. Reaching a viewpoint at over 3,500 meters above sea level with crampons strapped to your feet. Performance enthusiasts will revel in the endless challenges to conquer!

Others may prefer achievements that can't be measured—or at least are measured by the joy and pride felt upon reaching a goal. For example: learning to ski past the age of 30 or daring to launch yourself on an Olympic bobsled track at over 100 km/h.

The mountains push us to aim higher, go further, and surpass ourselves. They make our hearts race and remind us that we're alive. Most importantly, they invite us to tackle challenges for ourselves—because, after all, why not? It's an introspective experience you shouldn't miss!

MOUNTAINS OFFER ENDLESS COMFORT

Chunky sweaters, thick socks, fur-lined boots : mountain holidays in winter are the perfect excuse to wear nothing but ultra-cozy clothing for an entire week! Just thinking about it turns our faces into that emoji... you know, the one with pink cheeks and three little hearts floating around its face?

Goodbye uncomfortable jeans and suffocating ties. Once skiing is over, it's all about staying snug at home in soft thermal leggings. Wrapped up in a blanket. A steaming cup of tea in one hand, a decadent chocolate in the other. Forget "less is more"—comfort reigns supreme here!

You know the joy of watching the rain fall through your window while you're warm inside? Now imagine watching snowflakes drift down... while you're in a swimsuit in your jacuzzi! Suddenly, the drop in temperature at night becomes a cause for celebration. Speaking of celebrating— isn't it time for your massage with Robin?

THE MOUTAINS FULFILL OUR NEED FOR TOGETHERNESS

Sure, there are two or three moments during the day when it's best to leave us alone: In the morning, before coffee. On the subway, when we have our headphones in. Around 11:55 AM, when our stomach starts growling, and our mood becomes less than pleasant.

But outside of those critical moments? Quite the opposite! We want to see people, laugh, share stories about the day's adventures, and brag about the little one's latest milestone. Big communal tables? that's what we crave! Especially when we're not the ones cooking... Raclette for lunch, fondue for dinner: you've probably earned that "cheat meal" if you've followed point #1 (pushing your limits). Beware, though—you might end up changing your restaurant reservation ("actually, we're not four, we're eight") after dancing on tables with once-perfect strangers (après-ski has a way of bringing people together!).

And rest assured, your joyful gang will endlessly recount "Uncle Robert's episode" (who lost his bread in the cheese three times, haha) until their eyelids grow heavy in the bunk beds. Because that's part of the magic of mountain vacations too: cousins all piled into one big dorm room where adults are only allowed in for the bedtime story.

The moutians offer ea true break from daily life

Have you ever done your grocery shopping with skis on? Well, now you have! Mountain holidays aren't just about a change of scenery—although waking up to breathtaking views of snowy peaks certainly helps break away from "normal life." It's also about adopting a completely different pace and a new routine you'll quickly fall in love with.

Even boiling your breakfast egg (or cooking pasta before tackling the local mountain passes on your bike) is different. Don't forget to add an extra minute for the perfect texture—altitude changes everything!

In summer, it's not the honking horns of the city that wake you up... but the bells of beautiful Tarine cows, with their light brown coats, grazing peacefully in the Tarentaise valley. That gentle melody might even make your mouth water, thinking of the kilos of Beaufort and Tomme cheeses made from their time spent munching in the alpine meadows.

IN TNE MOUNTAINS, WE REDISCOVER OUR INNER CHILD

You used to read Heidi or Belle and Sebastian. Your kids love Frozen, dreaming of building an "Olaf" (you know, the snowman!) or drawing snow angels in a thick blanket of fresh snow. Admit it—you'd love to dive headfirst into those 50 centimeters of freshly fallen powder too! In the mountains, "I'm 10 years old. I know it's not true, but I'm 10 years old," as Alain Souchon once sang.

Watching your kids race down the slopes of Tignes, La Plagne, or La Rosière, you can't help but see yourself 30 years ago—with the same thrill on your face and the same zest for life. It's a real fountain of youth!

And you, what keeps bringing you back to the mountains again and again, winter and summer alike?
