Winter or Summer: When Should You Travel to the Mountains with Your Pet?

Going on vacation with a cat is easy. He’ll be thrilled that you let him laze around in the sun on the couch all day, no matter the season (while you go off and do all sorts of oh-so-exhausting activities of your own).

A dog, on the other hand, will want to stretch its legs (and do its business) several times a day. So choose a vacation destination (whether it’s snowy or not) that meets your dog’s energy needs.

Does your pet have the wisdom that comes with age and prefer short, peaceful walks to long, exciting hikes? He’ll be happy in any of our residences, apartments, and cottages, winter or summer.

Are you traveling with a young, energetic pet? Choose a “dog-friendly” vacation destination—that is, a place where your dog can run in the snow in winter and frolic on the trails in summer without putting anyone at risk (or causing any incidents with hikers or herds in the alpine pastures).

Take the time to review the current guidelines and regulations before putting on your hiking boots. Sometimes a leash is required; sometimes it isn’t. Some areas are protected and off-limits to dogs, even if they’re on a leash (this is the case in Vanoise National Park, for example). Ask our front desk staff for advice when you arrive: they’ll be happy to recommend the trails best suited for your furry friend.

A "pet-friendly" tip: What should you pack in your suitcase when traveling with your pet?

To make sure your pet has as great a vacation as you do, it’s important that he or she feels safe. How? By bringing along a few comforting familiar items. Do you know that Fido (or Kitty) only sleeps in his or her bed? That he or she refuses to eat from any bowl other than his or her own? Or chews on his or her favorite toy all day long? Save a little space in your suitcase for his or her favorite things!

Other essentials for traveling with your pet: its collar (with your contact information), its leash, any medications it may need, its health record with all vaccinations up to date, and a small first-aid kit. Also, its favorite dry food (which you might not be able to find where you're going).

Are you going on a trip this summer and planning to take your dog hiking? Consider bringing a collapsible water bowl—it’s easy to slip into a backpack—so your dog can stay hydrated (you can fill it with water from your own water bottle or from a second water bottle you’ve brought along just for your dog).

Are you traveling in the winter and know that your pet gets cold easily? Or that it has sensitive paws? Be sure to pack a coat and little boots (or a paw pad conditioner) to protect it from the cold and snow.
