At what age can you start taking a baby on a trip to the mountains?

It’s THE question that’s on every parent’s mind when planning a mountain vacation: “Is it safe to take my baby with me to this or that altitude?”
According to Vidal.fr, the go-to website for healthcare professionals (and non-professionals seeking reliable information), “doctors advise against stays at altitudes above 1,200 meters for children under six months old, above 2,000 meters for children under one year old, above 2,500 meters for children under two years old, and above 3,000 meters for children under ten years old.”

Are you traveling with a baby between 6 and 12 months old? We recommend that you book your vacation at La Rosière (1,850 m above sea level). For children ages 1 and up, you can consider a stay at Belle Plagne (2,050 m above sea level). Finally, for children ages 2 and up, you can feel confident staying at Tignes (2,100 m above sea level).

These recommendations are very general; feel free to consult your family doctor for more personalized advice based on where you live, your travel habits, and so on. (Keep in mind, for example, that babies live year-round in these three resorts without any problems.)

Choosing the Right Accommodations When Traveling with a Baby

Traveling with a baby can sometimes be stressful: Will the baby be able to sleep? Will the new, unfamiliar surroundings upset the baby? Will the baby get cold in the middle of January? We understand these concerns all too well. That is why all of our residences, apartments, and cottages :
- They are perfectly insulated; even if it's -15°C outside, you'll still be nice and warm inside
- They are also perfectly soundproofed; this means you can enjoy all the benefits of staying in the heart of the resort (proximity to shops, restaurants, cafés, etc.) without worrying about being disturbed at night by your neighbors or late-night revelers wandering the streets of Tignes, La Plagne, and La Rosière
- Are designed to promote restful sleep for all family members (private bedrooms and sleeping areas separated from the living room and kitchen, comfortable bedding, soft Linvosges sheets, blackout curtains, etc.).

Which stroller should you bring when traveling with a baby to the mountains?

Whether you're traveling with your baby to the mountains in winter or summer, we recommend an all-terrain stroller with sturdy wheels that can handle a variety of surfaces. That way, your outings won't be limited to paved sidewalks and sunny days.
In the summer, you can easily hike along the vehicle-accessible trails open to hikers (such as the 4x4 trail leading to Lake La Sassière in Tignes, for example).

In winter, your walks will take on an extra touch of magic thanks to the groomed walking trails set aside from the ski slopes, such as those in La Rosière , for example (be sure to check the conditions before putting your baby in the stroller: trail conditions can vary in winter depending on snowfall or temperature).

Travel with a baby… without giving up your activities!

A vacation in the mountains is a great way to share your love of nature and winter sports with your children from a very young age. That said, traveling with a baby shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the summer and winter activities you love so much: hiking, mountain biking, skiing… or even splashing around in a hot tub with your partner!

Want to get away for half a day, a full day, or just for the evening to go out to dinner? Our reception staff will provide you, upon request, with a list of babysitters living in TignesLa Plagne or La Rosière. Your little one shouldn’t hold it against you if, just this once, you entrust them to other expert hands…

Two places that offer peace of mind when traveling with a baby

It’s the home stretch before vacation. The computer is off; all that’s left is to load the suitcases into the car. You’re on your way to pick up your little one from daycare… when the childcare provider tells you that three of his little friends have runny noses and that a virus is going around! For now, your little one looks healthy and is laughing out loud. But you can’t help but watch for signs of an impending cold.

Travel with your baby with peace of mind: you’ll find a doctor’s office and a pharmacy in every resort wher Altitude Résidences is located (Tignes, La Plagne, and La Rosière). Two places we always hope we won’t have to visit (but which are reassuring and help calm those paranoid moments when you think you see an imaginary red spot on your baby’s perfect cheeks!).

What items should you pack when traveling with a baby?

Traveling with a baby can sometimes feel like moving house. A travel crib, high chair, stroller, and baby bathtub—it’s hard to do without all this gear, which is, to say the least… bulky!
Our tip for balancing safety, comfort, and lightness: choose accommodations where some baby gear is included. That way, all you’ll need to pack are your baby’s clothes, their favorite stuffed animal, and their usual small sheets and towels to remind them of the comforting atmosphere of home.

A baby kit is available free of charge in all our residences, apartments, and chalets upon request. It includes a travel crib (which will already be set up in your room upon arrival), a high chair, and age-appropriate tableware. We can also put you in touch with specialty stores where you can rent additional equipment, such as an all-terrain stroller (which is very useful for traveling with a baby in winter and walking on snowy paths).
